Strawberry Roan is one woman's search for meaning in a world of competition, isolation and passion. Her family is loving and supportive but her father's pressures become her own. She becomes a horsewoman, a breeder and raiser of horses, a kind of equne princess who must always win competitively against girls somehow better equipped than she. In time her life pursuits lead her towards doctoring and she becomes a neurologist with a driving ambition to help people who are on the edge. Sadly, the pressures here are complex and so is her unraveling marriage. She wins only by rugged individualism and the absolute will to win. It's a triumphant story as well as a dramatic one, laced with lovely descriptions of ranch life and the backwoods beauty of northern New Mexico..

"A compelling and uncompromising memoir, Strawberry Roan: Growing Up in the Shadow of Hermit's Peak is the powerful life story of author Judy Beil Vaughan. Whether she describes pushing back against political injustice, standing up for gender equality, or simply learning and growing through an intimate link to the natural world, Vaughan has delivered an inspiring tale of independence, stubbornness, and fortitude. She isn't afraid to shine light on her darkest days and personal struggles, imbuing this memoir with true vulnerability. The writing is authentic and immersive, so whether you love horses or the picturesque Southwest, or simply admire tales of humble American heroes, this is a riveting life story that needs no embellishment to leave a lasting impression."
—Self-Publishing Review, ★★★★
"A girl and her horse have made many a story, but here it is only the beginning. This moving memoir carries readers from the 1950s and a small mountain town in New Mexico to a life where the dream to return to that ranch life drives the author. The journey is filled with drama, love, heartbreak, growth, and change, all told in a straightforward voice of a true storyteller."
--Rosi Hollinbeck, San Francisco Book Review
"...the tone, atmosphere, and focus on a young woman's growth and transitions are vividly presented, and will attract readers with an initial interest in horse stories. This audience will find the actual underlying account goes far beyond a love of equines to probe the wider world of a woman's discovery of strength and self-purpose in life."
